Crash analysis also known as explicit analysis uses a completely different solution method to the other analysis methods we employ. It is based on the speed of sound through the material and the iterations are time dependent on the size of the elements used in the model. This introduces differences in the mesh creation between explicit and normal (implicit) analysis models. We use the explicit method for any analysis that requires significant plastic deformation and for material failure investigations. Using explicit analysis we can model car and rail vehicle crash scenarios as well as explosions situations such as mine blast on a military vehicle. We use the Altair HyperWorks CAE software for all our analysis work.
